Instead of signing a 49ers extension, Brandon Aiyuk is more likely to be traded; no deal has been made.

The lengthy contract disagreement between the 49ers and Brandon Aiyuk doesn’t seem to be going away, and a trade could happen soon.

According to NFL Network Insiders Mike Garafolo and Tom Pelissero’s report on Monday, contract negotiations are still at a standstill and it appears more likely that Aiyuk will be dealt than reach an agreement with San Francisco on an extension. According to Garafolo and Pelissero, several teams are vying for the ascending receiver, but no agreement has been reached yet.

A few moving components need to be taken care of in order to swing a transaction. Initially, a wide receiver who had consecutive 1,000-yard seasons in 2022 and 2023—including a career-high 1,342 yards and seven touchdowns last season—would need to be fairly compensated by the 49ers. Aiyuk would also need to consent to a new team’s extension.

Permission to negotiate a contract extension with Aiyuk’s agency has been given to several unnamed teams, should a move happen before then. Despite rumors that have been circulating online, Garafolo and Pelissero state that as of right now, no agreement has been made with the Steelers or anybody else.
