A RADIOHEAD FAN GOT A PIECE OF ‘JIGSAW FALLING INTO PLACE’’S MASTER TAPE IN HIS ‘A MOON SHAPED POOL’ VINYL
He had to take it to a mastering studio to hear the second-long clip
For their deluxe vinyl edition of ‘A Moon Shaped Pool’, Radiohead have been chucking in 1/2” recording tapes of original studio sessions from throughout the band’s lifetime. One fan’s gone the whole hog, though, taking the teeny bit of tape to a mastering studio to hear exactly what it is he received.
Turns out the sub-one-second chunk of tape harbours a teeny section of ‘Jigsaw Falling Into Place’ from ‘In Rainbows’ – though that’s not to say it didn’t cause a bit of confusion. Producer Nigel Godrich originally announced that it was part of ‘Bodysnatchers’, a verdict that Thom Yorke seemed to back up after he retweeted the original post. Megafans on Reddit quickly put that rumour to rest though, and Nigel conceded defeat: “”My mistake! It is jigsaw,” he tweeted, “it’s the fill after ‘come back in focus again’ – was listening on my phone before.. doh.”
Footage of the unveiling of the tape’s contents can be watched below. “The tape degrades over time and becomes unplayable,” explained the band back when they first announced the release plans. “We thought rather than it ending
up as landfill we would cut it up and make it useful as a part of the special edition. A new life for some obsolete technology. You may have silence, you may have coloured leader tape, you may have a chorus… It’s a crapshoot.”
‘In Rainbows’ recently joined the DIY Hall Of Fame – catch up with our retrospective on the record.
