It’s a subject that sparks a lot of passionate discussion. While everyone wants the team to perform well, a lot of supporters and players also want them to look good doing it.

Some admirers, including me, adore Nebraska’s classic style. The crimson helmet with white letters and no serif. At home, wear red jerseys with white pants. On the road, white over red. While not required, wearing striped pants is highly recommended. Nebraska’s appearance improves with age, just like a good wine does.

However, some admirers are hoping for more. They desire contemporary style and fashion. “Go Big Red” for them refers to donning red shirts and slacks. Everybody white? Okay, let’s go! That 2021 interlocking NU helmet? Return it. Perhaps place the Iron N or as well as white iterations of their leggings, jersey, and helmet. Temple appeared in twelve different combinations during Rhule’s final three seasons (2014–2016) before moving to Baylor, based on a fast count I did.

Rhule found the closets in the equipment room at Waco overflowing. The Bears could wear 120 different combinations of uniforms, according to a 2016 story. In 2019, Rhule’s last year, they revamped their uniforms, bringing in a new mix-and-match set of green, yellow, and white.

Remember that Rhule’s Bears adored the “color rush” appearance, Husker supporters who want Nebraska to wear all-red or all-white, should take heed. For sixteen of the thirty-nine games Rhule coached, Baylor wore all-one color.

Could NU become boring?

I don’t pay much attention to hiring. Still, I find it funny whenever recruiters show up.

The next uniform push for Nebraska would be to mix and match red, white, and black components into original combinations after they had a black version of the main uniform in circulation. I would wish to stay away from that slippery path.

However, as we have already observed, Matt Rhule seems to be a guy who is not constrained by rigid convention. Troy Dannen has demonstrated that part of his duty is to say “yes” to Rhule whenever possible. And because most supporters are so driven to victory, we’re prepared to give Rhule carte blanche to do whatever he pleases if he believes it would benefit the team—even changing Nebraska’s recognizable uniforms.
