Exclusive to Sky Sports: Mike Williamson talks about his incredible start to life as the head coach of MK Dons, his people-centric attitude, his “mentally fatiguing” style of play, and why he hasn’t considered getting promoted yet.

After being hired in late May, the seasoned Graham Alexander promised to work “every single minute to give the MK Dons supporters a team that had been successful.” At first, he kept his word, winning four of the first five games and taking home the Sky Bet League Two Manager of the Month title.

Alexander declared, “We have unbelievable ways of shooting ourselves in the foot,” following their 2-2 tie with Barrow at home on October 14, when they scored two goals in stoppage time in the second half.

“It’s nothing to do with luck – ‘I hope our luck changes, I hope someone sprinkles some magic dust over us’ – we’ve got to stop believing in fairy tales,” he said. After just 16 games across all competitions, he was gone two days later.

Mike Williamson, a former Newcastle defender who spent nearly four and a half years at Gateshead leading them to the FA Trophy final the next year and the National League North title in 2021/22, came at Stadium MK within a day.

At the Gateshead International Stadium, he had built a reputation for his attractive, possession-based style of play, which garnered praise from Toon boss Eddie Howe after a pre-season friendly last summer.
