Miami’s Talented Defensive Backs Coach Is Off To The NFL, So What’s This Mean For The Hurricanes?

Whoever Miami elects to be the heir apparent to Jahmile Addae has some big shoes to fill, so the Hurricanes need to choose wisely.

Yesterday, it was reported that Addae will be moving on from Miami to take the cornerback’s coach job with the Buffalo Bills. Addae spent two years on Miami’s staff after coming over from the Georgia Bulldogs after serving one season as their cornerbacks coach.

While at Miami, Addae’s top recruits included Zaquan Patterson (’24), Robert Stafford (’23), and Damari Brown (’23). While an impressive trio of recruits, Addae’s calling card was his ability to develop talent.

His first success story was with Tyrique Stevenson, who followed Addae over from Georgia and was fantastic in the 2022-23 season. He’d end up being drafted in the second round to the Chicago Bears and had a great rookie season. Additionally, he helped develop DJ Ivey into being a seventh round draft pick by the Cincinnati Bengals.

Miami has already replaced one position coach this offseason, as Tim Harris Jr. departed to UCF and was replaced recently with USF’s Matt Merritt. So now without a solid recruiter and top developer, how does Miami approach this situation?

As mentioned by our own Alex Donno, it’s hard to predict exactly what Mario Cristobal and company will do but their are names that are intriguing. One of which is Demarcus Van Dyke, who many fans have been quick to point out. However the likelihood of that one seems questionable, given how he just ended his stint in Miami a season ago.

Two other names that have been brought up have been Nick Monroe and Chevis Jackson, both of which could be very attainable options.

Regardless of the direction Miami goes in for the hire, the point is that it needs to be a splash. Especially with the veterans out of the safety room and the cornerbacks room up in the air, Miami needs a coach that can come in and bring the best out of the position.

Additionally, it needs to be a coach that will have chemistry with the defensive backs. Miami’s 2024 safety commit Patterson expressed his thoughts on X after the move was announced, surprised that the man who recruited him was now off another team.
