The Winnipeg Jets played the Pittsburgh Penguins on Sunday afternoon with an interesting storyline heading in. The Jets traded top prospect Rutger McGroarty in the offseason to the Penguins after he requested a trade due to his desire for more NHL ice-time and was seemingly hoping to receive more opportunities in Pittsburgh.

Many Jets fans didn’t like how McGroarty and his team went about the situation and when Pittsburgh came to Winnipeg, they had an interesting chant for the Penguins.
It certainly isn’t the end of McGroarty’s time in the NHL, but it was comedic to Winnipeg fans that their former top prospect wasn’t getting what he wanted. Jets fans were most likely energized after seeing their team pummel the Penguins for an 6-3 win and extending their perfect record to 5-0-0 on the season.
In return for McGroarty, the Jets received prospect Brayden Yager, who is currently playing in the Western Hockey League with the Moose Jaw Warriors.
The Pittsburgh Penguins are now 3-4-0 through the first seven games of the 2024-25 season after losing to the Winnipeg Jets on Sunday by a 6-3 score. It’s their second defeat of the young season, where the victors scored six on their goaltenders.
