The former captain of Whitehaven Rugby League, Dion Aiye, has been charged with sexual assault.
Per local paper, The News and Star, a spokesperson for Cumbria Police said: “Dion Aiye, 35, of Queen Street, Whitehaven, has been charged with sexual assault and bailed to attend Workington Magistrates’ Court on November 18, 2024.”
The offence is alleged to have taken place in May of this year with the club releasing a statement at the time confirming that he Aiye had been suspended.
Haven had signed him from the Papua New Guinea side, PNG Hunters with much of his early career coming in his native Papua New Guinea.
Prior to his move to England, Aiye had played internationally for the Kumuls, playing in the 2013 World Cup that was hosted in England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland.

Prior to his suspension by the club earlier this year, Aiye had played four games with the most recent being in March during Haven’s Round One Championship win over Swinton Lions.
He will now appear at Magistrates Court in a month’s time.
