Cowboys owner doesn’t want to be in the middle of the scorn for his bad managerial decisions and prefers to navigate under the radar
The Dallas Cowboys along with the New York Jets are by far the two biggest disappointments of the 2024 NFL season. Both franchises suffer from strong similarities. They have media-savvy owners who do not contribute to forming united locker rooms. They are in the eye of the storm, and tend to blame external factors for the problems they have in the present.
However, the Cowboys have kept their coach, Mike McCarthy despite the team’s collapse. Even the consensus among specialists is that McCarthy will remain in charge until the end of the season, taking advantage of the fact that his contract expires and considering that the season is practically lost, so it is better to wait until the offseason to look for a new coach.
But there’s another reason to keep McCarthy until January: it’s a rule that comes from the team’s culture. In his 30 years in charge of the team, Jerry Jones has only fired one of his coaches, in an untenable situation. That was Wade Phillips in 2010, to make way for Jason Garrett.
In this context, perhaps only an obvious crisis in the locker room, where McCarthy no longer had the respect of the players, would force Jones to let go of the rope. But according to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, this is unlikely.
“Jones can’t fire Dak Prescott or CeeDee Lamb because he’s spent nearly $500 million on them,” the analyst explained. While Mike McCarthy is on the hot seat, he may be able to stay there until the end of the season.
After firing Wade Phillips, Jerry Jones said: “I never wanted to do that, I almost regret it. So firing Mike McCarthy in the season with three and six, I really don’t see it that way. But I do see a team that even before losing Dak Prescott for the season was already rudderless”
In that disastrous season, the team had a 1-7 record and an overall record of 34-22 in his four years in charge. However, although he had lost the locker room, Jones insists he regrets not giving Phillips the rest of the season
