World’s fastest man Noah Lyles has been dethroned as the best track and field athlete in the United States, following the announcement of Grant Holloway as the winner of the USATF Jesse Owens Male Athlete of the Year for his outstanding 2024 season exploits.
Holloway had a record-breaking indoor season highlighted by staying undefeated in the 60m Hurdles, clocking a world record of 7.27s at the USATF Indoor Championships, and becoming the World Indoor Champion.
At the Paris Olympic Games, the hurdling king secured the gold medal by a tenth of a second with 12.99s clocking. In addition, Holloway set his season best of 12.86s to win the US Olympic Trials and had six races faster than 13s to go along with four Diamond League wins.
For Lyles, he had a brilliant year that saw him win US sprint titles at the Olympic trials to book his spot in Paris, where against all odds he became the Olympic 100m champion by defeating his fierce Jamaican rival Kishane Thompson in a new personal best time of 9.79s.
His victory saw him become USA’s first Olympic champion in the event since Justin Gatlin attained the feat at Athens 2004 Games. Following his gold medal-winning performance, Lyles claimed the 200m bronze medal behind Letsile Tebogo and Kenny Bednarek despite running ill with COVID-19, which was revealed after the race by the USATF.
