CLEMSON — Clemson quarterback Cade Klubnik didn’t practice Monday or Tuesday leading up to the game vs. Notre Dame, coach Dabo Swinney revealed Saturday. But the sophomore ultimately started the game, and he led the Tigers to a 31-23 upset win over the No. 12 Fighting Irish.
“There was a lot of concern Sunday, a little bit of concern Monday, not much concern Tuesday, didn’t look great Wednesday,” Swinney said. “But here he is.”
Klubnik is apparently dealing with a foot injury. His right foot and ankle were heavily taped for Saturday’s game, but he had no visible limp and played the entire game. He went 13-for-26 passing and threw for 109 yards, one touchdown and one interception in the win.
Clemson was already short-staffed, with five players missing the game with new injuries, three others continuing to miss games and two who had been declared out for the season several weeks prior. After the game, Swinney revealed that two more players are out for the season: Sophomore safety Sherrod Covil Jr. (torn ACL) and starting left guard Marcus Tate (unspecified). Tate, Swinney said, could potentially return for a bowl game.

As for Klubnik, all appears well for now.
“My foot feels great,” Klubnik said after the game. “I feel 100% today. Just kind of handled it with what the coaches and trainers told me to do, but I feel great.”
