For more than ten years, Brian Kelly served as the face of Notre Dame and led the team to unprecedented success. He might now be interpreted as attributing the team’s achievement to himself. “A lot of the guys there that are on both sides of the ball, I recruited,” said Kelly. Does he truly deserve recognition? Not sure!
But the success Notre Dame is currently enjoying under current HC Marcus Freeman was made possible by Kelly’s tenure. Under Kelly, they qualified for the CFP twice but lost in the semifinals and missed their title game both times. Kelly has a 113-40 record throughout his 12 years at Notre Dame. Year after year, he elevated the Fighting Irish to national prominence. But he had a miserable 1–7 record overall versus the top five teams. However, Brian Kelly’s departure from the program to join LSU caused an uproar after the team made 2 starts in the CFB Playoffs.
Brain Kelly became LSU’s coach three years after being Notre Dame’s most successful coach ever. His old team is now only one step away from winning the title. Kelly stated as he departed South Bend, “I want to be in an environment where I have the resources to win a national championship.” What a disaster!
His own team is currently 9–4 this season. In light of this, we can declare Brian Kelly to be a failure. But wait, a season alone cannot dictate a person’s entire fate. In late 2021, Brian Kelly surprisingly accepted the head coaching post at LSU after 12 years at Notre Dame. Since the 2022 CFB season, Brian Kelly has been the head coach of the LSU Tigers. LSU had a 10–4 record at the end of the 2022 campaign. This includes noteworthy wins over highly regarded teams, particularly triumphs over No. 7 Ole Miss and No. 6 Alabama in back-to-back weeks, which demonstrated the team’s potential under Kelly’s direction.
Before that, he was the head coach of Grand Valley State University’s football program from 1991 until 2003. He also attended Central Michigan from 2004 to 2006, Cincinnati from 2006 to 2009, and Notre Dame from 2010 to 2021. It is therefore anticipated that over 33 years of coaching experience won’t be in vain this season. Hope so. But regardless of Kelly’s win or loss, his wife is the one who has stayed by his side the entire time.
