Shocking news: E.J. Warner announce his 2025 departure from Rice to Notre Dame Fighting Irish football

Senior quarterback E.J. Warner, the son of Pro Football Hall of Famer QB Kurt, signed with Fresno State on Friday afternoon.

The 21-year-old Warner entered the transfer portal from the University of Rice last month with one season of eligibility remaining.

In 11 starts for the Rice Owls last season, he completed a career-best 61.9% of his attempts for 2,710 yards and 17 passing touchdowns against 13 interceptions.

Before his lone season at Rice, Warner started 20 games over two years at Temple.

He was named 2022 Rookie of the Year for the American Athletic Conference, but the best season of his career came in 2023, when he tossed 23 touchdowns to 12 interceptions and gained 3,076 yards through the air.

His career record in three seasons as a starter is 9-22.

Warner will compete for the Bulldogs’ starting QB job against returning understudies Joshua Wood and Jayden Mandal.

E.J’s father Kurt reacted to the transfer on social media, “I’m so pumped… It’s Go Time!”

The elder Warner played 12 seasons in the NFL and threw for 32,344 yards and 208 touchdowns. He won 2 MVP awards and played for former Fresno State tight end Mike Martz from 1999 to 2003, as part of the “Greatest Show on Turf” in St. Louis. The pair won a Super Bowl together.

Martz, then the Rams’ offensive coordinator and later head coach, actually began his coaching career at Bullard High School in 1973. That followed his 1972 season at Fresno State where he caught passes from John Behrens.

E.J’s transfer to the Central Valley establishes yet another connection between the Warner family and Fresno State.
