College football has had some impressive documentaries produced in just the past few years. Amazon Prime profiled Oklahoma State running back Barry Sanders and Colorado coach Deion Sanders. ESPN’s “30 for 30” series has been leading the game for years. It has profiled Notre Dame, Ohio State, USC, Miami and SMU, as well as extraordinary players such as Bo Jackson and Michael Vick.
Netflix joined the party a few years back with its “Untold” series. Notre Dame’s Manti Te’o, Texas A&M’s Johnny Manziel and the rise of the Florida Gators under Urban Meyer have been put under the spotlight. On Monday, a new college football subject emerged.
Netflix announced former Michigan support staffer Connor Stallions will be profiled in “Sign Stealer,” which is scheduled to debut on Aug. 27. Stallions and the Wolverines’ alleged sign stealing were a major story of last season.
That got us thinking: What are some Oklahoma Sooners football documentaries we’d like to see? OU has had two “30 for 30” episodes. “The Best That Never Was” focused on running back Marcus Dupree and spent a lot of time on the Oklahoma program. “Brian and The Boz” highlighted linebacker Brian Bosworth, who terrorized college football in the 1980s.
But, so much has happened since Dupree and Bosworth were on Owen Field, and so much happened before their arrival. Here are five more OU football stories we’d like to see told.
The easiest place to start is with Oklahoma’s incredible win streak of 47 straight wins in the mid-1950s.
This should already be a documentary because Bud Wilkinson’s team literally owned college football during this period. National championships from 1955 and 1956 tell the story of OU’s dominance. The Sooners’ record number of wins at the Football Bowl Subdivision level will likely never be touched. Wilkinson took what Bennie Owen started and turned OU into a winning machine.
The early 2000s Miami Hurricanes couldn’t do it. Pete Carroll’s USC Trojans couldn’t do it. Alabama at its peak under Nick Saban didn’t come close. That’s how special Wilkinson and the Sooners were for 47 fall Saturdays in a row
