The acclaimed rock documentary Becoming Led Zeppelin, which tells the story of singer Robert Plant, guitarist Jimmy Page, bassist John Paul Jones and drummer John Bonham, is new on digital streaming.
Plant, Page, Jones and Bonham formed Led Zeppelin in 1968 and the group went on to record a huge slate of rock classics before Bonham’s tragic death in 1980 at age 32.
Rated PG-13, Becoming Led Zeppelin opened in an IMAX-only engagement on Feb. 7 and expanded to theaters nationwide on Feb. 14.
Released by Sony Pictures Classics, the official summary for the film reads, “Becoming Led Zeppelin explores the origins of this iconic group and their meteoric rise in just one year against all the odds.”
Becoming Led Zeppelin became available on digital streaming via premium video on demand on Friday. Prime Video has Becoming Led Zeppelin available for purchase on PVOD for $24.99 or rental for $19.99 for a 48-hour period.
In addition to archived footage featuring the band, Becoming Led Zeppelin includes new interviews with surviving members Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, and John Paul Jones.
The documentary looks at a number of firsts for the band, from their first meeting to their first albums and their first tour. Becoming Led Zeppelin’s biggest first, though, is that it’s the first-ever documentary authorized by the band — something that was never thought possible before co-directors Bernard MacMahon and Allison McGourty took on the monumental task of making it happen.
“We had done months and months of preparations, including tracking down every interview of John Bonham, MacMahon told Billboard in a February interview. “A couple people who knew what we were doing said we were absolutely mad [since the band] had said no to every film. But we believed and carried on doing the work.”
During Led Zeppelin’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame career, the group recorded such hard rock classic songs as Whole Lotta Love, Stairway to Heaven, Houses of the Holy, Black Dog, Kasmir, The Ocean, Ramble On, Immigrant Song and All My Love.
