Newport County AFC has confirmed that head coach Nelson Jardim has left the club by mutual consent, just days after securing the team’s League Two survival. Jardim, who joined the Exiles in July 2024, led the club to safety with a goalless draw against Walsall, ensuring they would remain in the EFL for another season. Despite the positive outcome, Jardim and chairman Huw Jenkins agreed that it was the right time for a change, considering both personal and professional factors. Jardim had previously indicated he was reevaluating his future due to being separated from his family in Portugal and the challenges faced during the season. Assistant head coach Dafydd Williams has been appointed as interim head coach for the remaining matches.
Following the conclusion of the season, Newport County announced that several players would be leaving the club. Striker Omar Bogle, who had a strong first season with 19 goals but struggled with injuries in the 2023/24 season, heads the list of departures. Other players leaving include Offrande Zanzala, James Waite, Declan Drysdale, Harrison Bright, and goalkeeper Jonny Maxted. Additionally, Joe Day and Sam Bowen, who spent the season on loan at Yeovil and Wealdstone respectively, will also depart. Discussions are ongoing with key players such as Scot Bennett, Ryan Delaney, Aaron Wildig, and Harry Charsley regarding new contracts.
The club is now focusing on restructuring the squad for the upcoming season, with interim head coach Dafydd Williams leading the team in the final matches. The club aims to build on the experiences of the past season to strengthen and move forward in League Two.
