Ohio State football sets all-time high in ESPN FPI metric: Buckeye Breakfast
COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Ohio State football team is one of the best in the country and it has the numbers to back it up.
The Buckeyes are rated No. 5 in the country in total offense (535.9 yards per game) and first in total defense (214.8 yards). They rank in the top five in scoring offense (51 points per game), yards per play (7.22), least yards allowed per play (3.52) and least points allowed per game (8.60).
One of Ohio State’s most impressive stats is that it sits at the top of ESPN’s Football Power Index. This stat measures team strength while predicting its performance for the rest of the season. They have a score of 34.7, which is almost five points higher than No. 2 Clemson.
If Ohio State stays at this pace for the rest of the season it will be the highest score by a team since ESPN starting tracking the stat in 2004. The highest before the Buckeyes was USC’s 34.5 in late September through early August in 2005.
The Buckeyes have also posted a Sagarin College Football rating of 107.55, which is the highest of any team since the BCS and College Football Playoff era began in 1998.
Those numbers are sure to rise after OSU plays Rutgers on Saturday.
