Mamiko Tanaka was born in December 1996 in Japan. Tanaka attended Waseda University, where her basketball career officially kickstarted. In 2019, she began to play professional basketball when she joined Fujitsu Red Wave, a renowned team in the Women’s Japan Basketball League.
Tanaka stayed with Fujitsu Red Wave for a long four years before she decided to bid goodbye to her professional basketball career in 2023. The reasons for why she quit playing professional basketball remain behind the curtains.
However, in his last season, Mamiko Tanaka had an impressive shooting rate of around 47.7% from the field, in a total of 28 games, according to ESPN. A speculated reason behind leaving her professional athletic career would be her marriage with Shohei Ohtani.
In February 2024, Shohei Ohtani shocked fans when he announced his wedding with wife Mamiko Tanaka. Ohtani kept his relationship with Tanaka hidden until their wedding announcement. The Dodgers star broke the news to the fans with an Instagram post.
While Shohei Ohtani’s statement was in Japanese language, according to CNN’s translation of it, the Dodgers star said:
“The season is approaching, I am pleased to announce to you that I have gotten married. We are still young, and [there are] many things we don’t know yet, but we hope you will warmly watch over us. “We hope that the two of us (and one dog) will work together to support each other and move forward alongside with our fans.”
Almost two weeks after announcing their wedding, the Dodgers made Mamiko Tanaka social media official. The Dodgers posted an adorable picture of Ohtani posing alongside Tanaka on X. In the tweet, the couple could be seen boarding their plane to Seoul.
In May 2024, Shohei Ohtani and Mamiko Tanaka made their first public appearance when the couple attended the Blue Diamond Gala by the Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation. According to multiple pictures from inside the event, the couple were also spotted posing for snapshots with singer Ed Sheeran.
