AN Unexpected departure: Marcus Freeman terminate His 10-year contract with Notre Dame due to…

Marcus Freeman has done one of the best jobs in college football this season, leading Notre Dame to the national championship after the Fighting Irish were upset by Northern Illinois in their second game of the season.

The Fighting Irish defeated Indiana, Georgia and Penn State to reach the national title game, with one more game against No. 8 Ohio State.

Freeman, who was promoted from defensive coordinator to head coach after former coach Brian Kelly left for LSU, has a 33-9 record as a head coach, and his efforts recently were rewarded with a contract extension.

Freeman signed a multi-year contract extension with Notre Dame just before the College Football Playoff, after the Fighting Irish finished the regular season with an 11-1 record.

While the specifics of the deal are unknown due to Notre Dame being a private school, ESPN reported the contract lasts through the 2030 season and was expected to make him one of the highest-paid coaches in college football without a national championship.

His previous deal paid him $6,687,754 million in 2024, according to tax documents via USA TODAY Sports’ coaches salary database.

“The investment they continue to pour into our program is invaluable to our student-athletes and staff,” Freeman said in the Notre Dame announcement. “This commitment goes well beyond myself, as they are dedicated to ensuring all aspects of our program are competitive within the upper echelon of college football.”
