Forsan ISD announced on Tuesday morning that former Sweetwater assistant coach Casey Thompson has been hired as the Buffaloes’ new head football coach and athletic director.
“Me and my family are very excited,” Thompson told the Reporter-Telegram. “We’re excited for the opportunity, we’re excited for the adventure and we’re humble for the opportunity that we have in front of us.”
Thompson replaces Jason Phillips, who announced he was stepping down as head football coach and athletic director in January but will stay at Forsan as the Dean of Students and head softball coach. Phillips led the Buffaloes to an 88-84 record in 16 seasons with his best season coming in 2021 where they were state ranked and went 10-2. This past season, Forsan struggled to a 2-8 overall record and a 2-3 mark in District 3-2A, missing the playoffs.
Thompson, 47, has been in coaching for 24 years and for the past three seasons he served as special teams coordinator, running backs coach and head girls track coach at Sweetwater.
Prior to Sweetwater, he also served as an assistant coach at Arlington Martin and was also a head football coach and AD in 2013-14 at Sterling City, which is just 30 miles from Forsan.
Thompson said his wife, Erin, is also from Iraan, so he is familiar with the area.

“That was certainly a factor, being close to her hometown,” said Thompson on part of his decision to apply for the Forsan job. “Really, the reason I applied for the job is I was very curious as that place doesn’t have much turnover. Coach Phillips, who has been there and done a very good job, has been there for 20 years, 16 years as a head coach. The previous head coach was (Tommy) Thompson, who had also remained on staff. I just knew there was something special about it because they go there and they don’t leave.
“I started talking to people in my coaching network and everyone I talked to said there are really good people there from the administration to the parents. Of course, good parents raise good kids. They’re very supportive of athletics and extracurriculars. They also said it’s a very good school system. When I went on my interview, I witnessed it. I saw it firsthand, I experienced it and I’ve been very impressed. I’ve been very impressed with the administration and the efforts that went into easing the transition for my family and I’ve been very pleased and grateful for their hospitality.”
