
OU softball added another pitcher Saturday and it wasn’t NiJaree Canady.
The Sooners earned a commitment from former Louisiana right-hander Sam Landry, who announced her decision vis Instagram.
Landry is head coach Patty Gasso’s fifth transfer portal commit this offseason, filling OU’s final roster spot. Landry joins Campbell pitcher Isabella Smith, North Carolina catcher Isabela Emerling, Utah outfielder Abby Dayton and BYU infielder Ailana Agbayani as Sooner portal commits.
Landry recorded a career-best 24 wins with a 2.09 ERA in 2024, while surrendering 26 extra base hits over 127 1/3 innings. Landry led Louisiana in strikeouts (165) and held opposing batters to a .219 batting average.
OU returns Kierston Deal who held a 14-1 record with a 1.97 ERA in 78 ⅓ innings last season.
The No. 1 Oklahoma Sooners (19-0) and No. 10 South Carolina Gamecocks (20-0) open Southeastern Conference (SEC) Play Friday, March 7 through Sunday, March 9 at Love’s Field in OU’s first league games as a member of the SEC.
Oklahoma is 4-5 all-time against South Carolina and 4-2 against the Gamecocks under head coach Patty Gasso. The Sooners are meeting SC for the first time since March 11, 2018 when the Gamecocks visited Norman. OU put up a five-run third inning in the 5-1 win against the Gamecocks. Mariah Lopez threw 5.1 innings in the win and current assistant coach Falepolima Steele (nee Aviu) went 2-for-3 with a run. Nicole Pendley also homered for the Sooners.
South Carolina is 20-0 and just tied the best start to a season in program history. The Gamecocks jumped to No. 10 in the ESPN/USA Softball Collegiate Top 25 poll. South Carolina head coach Ashley Chastain Woodard is in her first year leading the Gamecocks after five seasons at Charlotte. The Gamecocks are pacing the nation in doubles and doubles per game.
Oklahoma is 19-0 for the third time in four seasons, with the lone year without a perfect record through 19 games being last season’s 18-1 mark. OU has gone no worse than 15-4 in the first 19 games of the season in each of the last eight years, not including the shortened 2020 COVID season. The Sooners’ 39 home runs are six more than OU’s mark at this point last year, while their 173 runs is 18 greater than it was at the 19-game mark in 2024.
