Adam clayton found what he was looking for when he was recording The Joshua Tree in 1986. A year later, he bought Danesoate in Rathfarnham in Dublin, the 18th-century home where U2 made the album. Now, all the bassist am wants is to share a piece of his 17-acre paradise with his gardener.
He has applied to Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown county council to build a two-bedroom, single-storey cottage that will accommodate the estate’s resident head gardener. Currently that is Darragh Stone, who has worked with the musician for four years. According to documents filed with the planning application, the home will be L-shaped and wrap around a small private courtyard.
It will comprise two bedrooms, a bathroom, utility room, guest lavatory, and an open-plan kitchen and dining area. It will be bigger than the average three-bedroom semi-detached house, measuring 110 sq m.
Clayton has also applied to build new facilities for the maintenance staff who work on his private estate. Along with Stone, there are another four gardeners. The staff building will replace an existing structure and include a gardener’s office, bathroom and kitchen area. The construction will take place in the estate’s 19th-century walled garden.
An existing “deteriorating” glass house will be replaced with a new glass house and potting shed.
