Wrexham are currently top of League One after a blistering start to the season, with Phil Parkinson’s side having won four of their opening five matches with promotion on their minds

Wrexham co-owner Rob McElhenney has praised manager Phil Parkinson as the Welsh football club’s ascent through the English leagues looks set to continue.

The Red Dragons are currently leading League One after five matches, with Parkinson’s squad winning four, drawing one and losing none. The 56 year old, who has already led Wrexham to two consecutive promotions, has amassed more points since the start of the 2022/23 season than any other team in England’s top five leagues

Wrexham has secured 212 points during this period, with a potential promotion to the Championship, England’s second tier football league, at stake this season. “And it’s all because of this man,” McElhenney said of Parkinson, sharing a picture of the head coach on social media platform X. “In Phil we trust.”

Wrexham’s most recent match was a 3-0 victory over Shrewsbury at the Racecourse Ground. Ollie Palmer, Elliot Lee, and Jack Marriott scored the goals for the Red Dragons.

“Five games in and I know it doesn’t count for a great deal but equally I think we’ve got to be pleased with the work so far this season,” Parkinson commented.

“Having the ability to handle being at the top and that extra kind of expectancy it creates, of course we’ve been there. The run with Notts County in the National League, every game was full on and you had to win every game and had to perform at your best to keep winning. So yes, we’ve got a group who are used to living with that and hopefully we’ll continue to thrive under that bit of added pressure.”

Wrexham head coach, Parkinson, is considering whether to add to his squad since he’s got two slots available, but he seems inclined to trust those already on board. He mentioned, “At the moment we will roll with what we have got,” emphasising the quality of underused players in the team.

He also brought up the trial of young Josh Adam from Manchester City, saying: “He is a player we would like to keep because he has got real talent but in terms of a senior player coming in at the moment, we have got enough of those fighting for places.”

Looking ahead, Parkinson’s Wrexham will face Salford City in the Football League Trophy on Tuesday and then tackle big-spending Birmingham City during the weekend – a club emboldened by the financial clout of NFL icon Tom Brady, who invested in the team which shelled out over $26 million on transfers last summer.
