Former Clemson player who helped Tigers win 2 national championships was shot to death, officials say

The Guilford County Sheriff’s Office said that around 2:30 a.m. Sept. 7, deputies responded to a call about a loud party on Spring Mills Road in Overton’s hometown.

While on the way to the scene, deputies were informed a shooting had occurred at the home.

Upon arrival, deputies found Overton suffering from a gunshot wound.

Authorities said that, despite immediate medical attention, Overton was pronounced dead at the scene.

There have been no arrests at this time, and deputies ask anyone with information or who attended the party to contact Detective Robertson at 336-641-5969. For anonymous tips, contact Guilford County Crime Stoppers at 336-373-1000.

Overton signed with Clemson University out of Walter Hines Page High School and earned a degree from Clemson in sports communication in the summer of 2019.

Overton helped Clemson win national championships in both 2016 and 2018.

According to Clemson, Overton played more than 1,000 career snaps at the university across the 2016-19 seasons, collecting 52 career receptions for 777 yards and seven touchdowns over 51 games with five starts.
