The Toronto Blue Jays announced Friday that former Cincinnati Reds manager David Bell has been hired as the team’s vice president of baseball operations and assistant general manager.
The Reds fired Bell in September, with one week left in the regular season, and hired Terry “Tito” Francona to be their new manager in October.
Bell, a former Moeller High School standout and the son of former Red Buddy Bell and grandson of Reds Hall of Famer Gus Bell, was the Reds’ manager for six seasons.
“Bell will oversee the player development and physical and mental performance departments, while also contributing to Major League strategic planning decisions and advising on player evaluations and acquisitions,” the club said in a press release Friday night. “Bell reports to Ross Atkins, EVP, baseball operations and general manager and joins the baseball operations leadership team.”
Bell turned 52 years old in September.
In 2018, Bell was among candidates to interview with Toronto before the Blue Jays hired Charlie Montoyo to replace John Gibbons as manager.
Bell was the San Francisco Giants’ vice president of player development when the Reds hired him in October 2018.
